Summary

Shotwick Hall, Hall Lane. Second manor house of the Hockenhulls, replacing house on moated site (RN: 2027/2). Dated 1662 for Joseph and Elizabeth Hockenhull. The Hockenhulls appear to have lived mainly at Hockenhull, Shotwick being usually occupied by a second son. After the alteration of Hockenhull manor in 1715, the Hockenhulls made this their permanent residence and they resided in the village until the mid 18th century. An inventory of Joseph Hockenhull in 1697 lists the following rooms:- parlour, dining room, buttery, room over the hall, red chamber, green chamber, miller's chamber, apple loft and kitchen. Present building:- dated 1662 with some late 20th century internal alterations. Brick with flush red sandstone quoins. Welsh slate roof and two massive lateral brick chimneys. E-plan. Two-storey and attic. Symmetrical five-bay front. Plaster ceilings have moulded frieze, fleur-de-lys and plaques of lions. Parlour has decorative plaster panel above recent corner fireplace. Has initials and arms of builders and the date. Room to left of hall has large open fireplace and chamfered and stopped ceiling beam. Identical layout at first floor with small oratory over porch.

The Hockenhulls appear to have lived mainly at Hockenhull, Shotwick being usually occupied by a second son (1). After the alteration of Hockenhull manor in 1715, the Hockenhulls made this their permanent residence. They resided in the village until mid C18 (2). An inventory of Joseph Hockenhull in 1697 lists the following rooms:- parlour, dining room, buttery, room over the hall, red chamber, green chamber, miller's chamber, apple loft and kitchen (3). Symmetrical five-bay front. Dentil brick band at first floor and plain band at second floor rising to form hood moulds over windows. End bays project under brick-coped gables. C20 wooden mullioned and transomed windows. Projecting central two-storey porch. Moulded wooden doorcase below brick basket-arched head. Interior: Two original two-board doors. Oak open well Jacobean staircase. Plaster ceilings have moulded frieze, fleur-de-lys and plaques of lions. Parlour has decorative plaster panel above recent corner fireplace. Has initials and arms of builders and the date. Room to left of hall has large open fireplace and chamfered and stopped ceiling beam. Identical layout at first floor with small oratory over porch.
