Summary

An early eighteenth century inn know as the Fox and Barrel since at least 1813. The inn, now a public house, has been extended in the late twentieth century.

Public house. Early eighteenth century, altered. Stone plinth. Double pile. Condition: fair.

Eighteenth century early, with alterations two storeys and attic two window inn with wing to north. Slate roof. Near-flush casements renewed. Sandstone, rendered and limewashed. Interior. Stopped bevelled beams. Wide boarded doors, with H hinges and with old strap hinges. Ormerod "History of Cheshire" (see 4).

The Fox and Barrel is named and depicted on a map of Delamere Forest in this volume dated 1813.

This map depicts an almost square building with a smaller rectangular building to the immediate north, and a small building and enclosure to the east. These buildings appear to be orientated around an irregular yard. An area of open ground lies between the road and the inn. Labelled Fox & Barrel Inn.

Seemingly as depicted on the historic Ordnance survey maps (see 5, 6, & 7). The only addition is a car park to the south of the inn.

The rectangular building has been extended at its northern end into an L-shape and now appears to be attached to the main building. The main building has a single storey extension to the east. The animal pen is no longer extant, but the small building remains. A large gravel area is visible to the north, possibly an overflow parking area.

Further extensions infill the area between the end of the L-shaped building and the main building.
