Full Description
<1> Lancaster University Archaeological Unit, 1995, Land at Hampton, Cheshire: An Archaeological Evaluation (Client Report). SCH4100.
Archaeological evaluation undertaken in April 1995 in advance of a proposed fishery development of 12.8 hectares near Egerton Hall, Hampton. The evaluation comprised a desk-based survey, and then following ploughing and harrowing of the area of development, a topographic survey and an examination of the ground surface. In tandem with the programme of field-walking a metal-detecting survey was also undertaken.
Results of the evaluation show that this area has been meadow or pasture since at least the later seventeenth century. The most significant find was a small scatter of burnt stone measuring circa 7m in diameter and situated at SJ 5185 5004, on the top of a mineral soil ridge. Similar scatters of burnt stone are known from many wetland areas of England are potentially Bronze Age in date.
<2> Leah, MD; Wells, CE; Appleby, C; Huckerby, E, 1997, The Wetlands of Cheshire (North West Wetlands Survey 4), 174, CH94 (Monograph). SCH3260.
Burnt stone spread extending over an area of c 10m. The spread sits on an outcrop of glacial drift or river terrace deposits, beside the Bickley Brook. Alluvial deposits surround the site. Recorded during NWWS fieldwork.
