Building record 5739 - No.19 High Street, Northwich

Summary

A former public house converted to use as a bank. Unfortunately much of the public house's ornamental façade was removed at this time. The use of timber framing in this building is a deliberate construction technique common in Northwich during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries designed to reduce the effects of subsidence. If subsidence occurred the structure could be jacked to a level position or dismantled and moved.

Criteria A: Unlisted timber framed buildings in Vale Royal which contain structural or building techniques which were designed to reduce the effects of subsidence.

<2> Vale Royal Borough Council, 1977-79, The Vale Royal Borough Council Historic Buildings Survey Index Card, NCH/HB 185 (Paper Archive). SCH5481.

A late nineteenth century brick faced timber framed building. Arcaded façade in fine bricks with a phoenix rising from the flames carved in stone tablet on front gable. Two brick string courses, slightly projecting, three tier sash windows with labels and labelling round blind arcades above the windows. Flat topped gable parapet with small half hipped roof behind.

Plans drawn up in 1955 mentions a barrel drop being filled in. Early twentieth century maps show a building on this site to have been a public house called 'The Eagle and Child'. There is a brick/terracotta moulding of an eagle on the top of the façade. This suggests that this actual building was a pub at one time. It was also Heaths Market before it became a bank.
