Full Description

A soil horizon overlying the natural clay subsoil and containing Roman period pottery and interpreted as a possible cultivation soil layer, was identified in Trench 2 during an archaeological evaluation in the car park at Steam Mill St., Chester, in 2003 (1).

Although the layer was impacted by and truncated by later activities in this area, it could be characterised as a ‘dirty’ looking horizon of mid-grey silty clay containing heavily abraded Roman pottery (1). The relationship between this layer and a ditch observed in Trenches 1 and 3 of this evaluation is uncertain.
