Full Description
A rock-cut feature, possibly of Roman date, was found adjacent to a sandstone wall foundation (CHER 8102) and Roman deposits containing pottery (CHER 8103) during an archaeological evaluation (in Trench 1) at the corner of The Groves and Souter’s Lane, Chester, in 2007 (1).
Later activity has destroyed the precise stratigraphic relationship between it and these other features, but one possible interpretation is that it was a drain aligned northwest to southeast, measuring 0.8m deep and 0.4m wide. The cut was vertical, with a ledge set back 0.1m from the edge, a ledge that may have been used for a layer of capping stones (1).
