Full Description
A probable wall foundation made of sandstone blocks with a possible rubble core, was found overlying bedrock during an archaeological evaluation (in Trench 1) at the corner of The Groves and Souter’s Lane, Chester, in 2007 (1).
The footing was aligned northwest to southeast, and appeared to consist of two to three surviving courses of roughly-squared sandstone masonry blocks with the basal course offset by 0.1m from the upper courses. The blocks measured up to 1.1m by 0.3m by 0.4m and were bonded with a pink sandy clay material. The core was comprised of rough sandstone fragments, and the footing was estimated to have been c 0.6m in width (1).
