Full Description
Evidence for a possible north-south aligned road was recorded during several investigations at the Chester Infirmary site in 1992 and 1998. An archaeological evaluation in 1992 around the former hospital buildings recorded traces of a metalled surface on the western half of the site (Trench 11). The compacted surface comprised crushed and broken sandstone intermixed with small pebbles (1). Further investigations in 1998 recorded evidence of a gully running parallel to the road. (2)
A gully and a post hole of a possible second century date were also recorded perpendicular to the road and may represent properties fronting onto the road. (1)
