Archaeological investigations at Black Friars House in 1986 recorded evidence of early Roman occupation in the area comprising large amounts of charcoal and produced some slight evidence for lead-working activity

No reference to industrial activity was made in the subsequent publication of the excavations, however, and the evidence remains doubtful.
