Archaeological investigations carried out at Nun’s Field in 2007 (now the Council Headquarters building) recorded evidence of a building, or buildings, of considerable size. A full report of the excavations is not yet available, however.
The evidence comprised the stone foundations of at least one structure subdivided into a number of smaller rooms at least two of which were furnished with tessellated flooring. Several phases of activity were noted at the site including earlier traces of a timber built structure in the form of post holes and beam slots beneath the stone foundations. Later phases of activity were also encountered comprising internal alterations to the standing stone structure that involved the destruction of one of the tessellated floors.
The activity to the west of the road is currently interpreted as a private residence or serving an official role.
