Full Description
During test pitting off Delamere St., and to the north of George St. in the Gorse Stacks Car Park area, a Roman cultivation soil layer was identified in one test pit (Test Pit 6) (1). Elsewhere on this site, a Roman quarry, rubbish deposits, and a complex sequence of pit and ditch features were identified, but this layer represents the only cultivation soil found in the immediate vicinity. Several similar deposits, however, were recorded to the north during the course of other excavations (1).
