Full Description
An assemblage of Roman period pottery, including some Samian ware (imported from Gaul) and tile fragments, found during and evaluation at 20 City Rd. in 2002 (1). The excavators concluded that the assemblage of 24 sherds, dating broadly to the second century, was likely to have been redeposited here during the eighteenth century redevelopment of the site (1).
Note however, that a piece of daub was found, in addition to one ibrex. Perhaps of some significance were a few iron objects (a nail and a blade), and evidence of iron processing in the form of slag. No archaeological features dating to the Roman period were observed in the excavation areas, although a later evaluation identified Roman pits and features at this location (CHER 8036).
