Full Description
A possible Roman decorated lead spindle-whorl. Found in excavations for the foundations of council houses in Hockenhull Avenue, Tarvin, on the east side of Hockenhull Lane. The spindle-whorl is of biconical form, 1 inch in diameter with a central hole 0.25 inches in diameter. It is decorated with a faint cast pattern of lines forming a petal-like motif and dots on both surfaces. Comparison with Roman spindle whorls suggests this one is probably Roman (1). This form of lead spindle-whorl is commonly found in Cheshire and now considered to be post medieval in date (4,5).
