Summary

Watling Street is the name given to the Roman road that links Chester with Wroxeter, and Caerleon. It is not to be confused with the Watling Street that runs from the SE coast through London then onto Verulamium ( St Albans) and (Viroconium) Wroxeter. The route of the road can be followed from Chester to its crossing point of the Dee at Aldford and then onto Malpas where it disappears from the landscape. Watling Street SJ 43065674 to 43805510. South of Edgerley Lane, from the sharp bend in the road, the agger runs down the east side of a long straight hedge for a distance of 350 yards, accompanied by a parish boundary. Its line is then marked by a rough track for a further 250 yards. It then runs across the fields to join another hedge and footpath at SJ 435558. After this the agger travels across open fields to cross the lane connecting King's Marsh and Coddington (Marsh Lane) at SJ 438551. Agger - The roman name for embankment built to allow drainage of the road surface. Could be simple earth structures or be many different layers of stone. Material for the agger was usually dug for a ditch on either side of the road.
