Description
A licensed bar built to serve the needs of the workers from the nearby “Wolverhampton Corrugated Iron Co” (who had moved to Ellesmere Port from Wolverhampton at the turn of the century) and “Burnells” iron works.
Claimed to be the longest bar in England.
Pints were ranged along the bar 3 deep at change of shift. The workers would come in, select a row of three pints, drink them down and then pay for them.
Above each door a Decorative Cartouche stonework curved top parapet panels depicting sea serpents and cornucopias (the wealth from inland, (i.e. the Midlands) disgorging to the sea, reflecting Ellesmere Port as an Entrepot, or transhipment port).
Narrow (2”/50mm) smooth red brickwork with York stone surrounds to doors and windows. Applied columns with ball finials to parapet.
Condition
Good. Original “long bar” removed.
Current Use
In use as a wine bar.
