Summary

Church of St John the Evangelist Old Chester Road Great Sutton Architect: Date: 1879-80 Designed by David Walker, this is a conventional Victorian church, built in 1879 to 80 of coursed rusticated stone with a pitched slate roof. It has pointed arched Victoria Gothic windows and an unusual conical spire with a turret on the south west side (such towers are usually square). The timber lichgate is elaborate, with a pitched roof clad in split sandstone “slates”. There are remains of the coffin rests either side of the lichgate and an inscription in the cross beam of the roof.

Description

Conventional Victorian church. Coursed rusticated stone walls, pitched slate roof, pointed arch, Victoria Gothic windows, unusual conical spire with turred to south west (i.e. towers are usually square).

Elaborate timber lichgate with pitched roof clad in split sandstone “slates”. Bracket remains of coffin rests each side of lichgate. Inscription carved into roof truss tie.

Good.
