Steam Wagon Watering Points
LL11 (Previously LL GS/1)
Address: In front of 965 Chester Road, Great Sutton
Architect: Probably Douglas & Frodsham, Chester
Date: 1899
Description
2 No Cast iron cabinets in the road verge, inscribed “W.C.W. Co” (West Cheshire Water Company?) and “Motor Wagon Supply” cast lettering on a front panel that includes a clocking keyhole and an inlet point for a hosepipe.
When the special key was inserted into the machine the action of turning would cause the key to leave a mark on a roll of paper (similar to a bus conductor’s clocking machine) – this would also cause the shutter to move away from the hose access hole, allowing the motorman to connect the hosepipe and replenish the tanks of the steam wagon.
Condition
Good.
Rare survivors of a brief period in road transport history.
Southernmost box has key and shutter mechanism missing.
Current use
N/A.
