Building record 5662 - Steam wagon watering points,965 Chester Road ( in front of), Great Sutton

Summary

Steam Wagon Watering Points in front of 965 Chester Road, Great Sutton Dated 1899 and probably constructed by Douglas & Frodsham, Chester Two Cast iron cabinets in the road verge, inscribed "W.C.W. Co" (West Cheshire Water Company?) and "Motor Wagon Supply" cast lettering on a front panel that includes a clocking keyhole and an inlet point for a hosepipe. These cabinets are rare survivors of a brief period in road transport history. When the special key was inserted into the machine the action of turning would cause the key to leave a mark on a roll of paper (similar to a bus conductor’s clocking machine) this would also cause the shutter to move away from the hose access hole, allowing the motorman to connect the hosepipe and replenish the tanks of the steam wagon.
