Description
Hinderton Hey is a substantial house. The building is in the Arts and Crafts style based on a post medieval hall house design. The property is 2.5 storeys high and constructed from brick with a graduated, green slate roof.
The front facade, in particular, is very nicely detailed with leaded lights windows set within sandstone mullions. The rear originally featured side opening timber casements with Georgion panes. These windows have largely been replaced with modern examples. The interior is simple, as would be expected, with few decorative details of interest although the original staircase remains.
Beckett's buildings can commonly be identified for commonly having two strap hinges on all external doors. The top hinge extends across the full width of the door while the bottom one does not. This house was noted for fine fireplaces. Beckett's daughter later recalled the fireplaces being decorated with small Dutch tiles. The house was also noted for the use of teak joinery and teak boards.
This property was very influential and much admired in its day. A watercolour perspective drawing was shown at the Royal Academy in 1912. The watercolour itself is of note, as it was produced by the outstanding architectural draftsman T Raffles Davison. The house also featured in the picture magazines Modern Homes (1909) and Family Homes (1912) and the Royal Academy (1912).
