Hand forged iron axe dating to the Medieval period. The axe has a triangular socket and flared blade. W.L Goodman (see 3) suggests axes of this shape are uncommon in the medieval period (although popular in illustrations). They come into use in the late Medieval period and continue through to the nineteenth century for general purpose domestic use. The object is corroded and has a reddish brown patina.
