Full Description
Milestone: circa 1830 heavy rectangular sandstone block with a shaped top. It reads "From ....... 7 Miles" on south face, and "From ....... 19 1/4 Miles" in good seriffed script. The placenames of Marple and Hall Green (the ends of the canal) were deliberately erased during the Second World War to confuse German parachutists. This is an example of the style of milestone on this canal with simpler distance stones between. There is an example of such a stone south of canal bridge no. 19 Adlington.
