Type and Period (1)
Full Description
A stone revetment to the eastern bank of the River Bollin constructed to constrain the river channel and prevent erosion of railway embankment (CHER: 2529/1) to the east (1).
A stone revetment on the eastern bank of the River Bollin running south from SJ90417587 to SJ90437569. The revetment comprises flat sand/grit stone squared rubble built to courses approximately 0.5m wide. It is buried in places by alluvium and survives up to a height of 0.5m. The river channel is very straight at this location and it is probable that the timber revetment is associated with the timber and stone revetments to the north (CHER 4681/2 & 4681/3) which constrain the river channel to the western side of the valley. This was probably done to build up a difference in height between the river channel and the valley floor, the energy of which could be utilised by the mill at Prestbury (CHER 1579/1) (2).
The course of the river is very stright and the western bank is planted with a line of trees (3 & 4).
