Monument record 1970/9 - Bellevue Farm Enclosure

Please read our .

Summary

Cropmarks recorded by aerial photography in July 1995 show a rectangular enclosure with two straight sides and two round corners. One of a number of possible practice camps in this area. The presence of a clavicula (a curved rampart protecting the entrance to a roman fort) at one of these enclosures confirms the roman date of this group of sites. Practice camps are thought to have been built by roman troops to train in earthwork construction.

No. 9. One of a group of a series of subrectangular enclosures within a few kilometres of Chester. A discussion about the interpretation of these features can be found in this article. New discoveries from aerial photography and excavation support a Roman Military origin.

A Roman Camp is visible as cropmarks on oblique aerial photography in the parish of Guilden Sutton, centred at SJ 4409 6781. The cropmark clearly defines the ditch surrounding the camp and an entrance into the enclosure. The site is extant on the latest 2016 aerial imagery
