Summary

Cropmark in grounds of Upton by Chester High School. Photographed in May 1991 it shows two sides of a rectangular enclosure with straight sides and one rounded corner. It is possibly one of a number of Roman practice camps in this area. Practice camps are thought to have been built by Roman troops to train in earthwork construction. GIS analysis of aerial photographs taken in July 1994 show that these cropmarks correspond with field boundaries shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition 25" to 1 mile map and therefore could be field boundaries.

Full Description

Cropmark photographed in May1991 of 2 sides of rectangular enclosure with straight sides and 1 rounded corner in grounds of Upton by Chester High School. Possible practice camp associated with RN:1970/ 1-4 & 6 (1).

These cropmarks may correspond with field boundaries shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition 25" to 1 mile map (5).
