Summary

Stanney Mill. A watermill on Mill Brook, north-east of Little Stanney Village surviving into C20. Earliest ref 1184 in Cartulary of St Werburgh's Abbey. 17th century reference in Bunbury MSS. Shown on Cheshire Maps from Burdett onwards. Flyndale Mill on boundary between Great and Little Stanney, may be the same site. Mentioned 1279 in the Coucher Book of Whalley Abbey. Norris states there is some evidence for the watercourse surviving in the 1960s. Watermills are known to have been used in Britain during Roman and Saxon times. In the Domesday survey of 1086, around 6,000 mills were recorded. In medieval times each manor that the right to have its own mill with the peasants forced to use it. A tax was payable on all corn ground and there were fines for those to tried to mill corn in their own homes using hand querns.

Shown on Cheshire Maps from Burdett onwards (1). Flyndale Mill, (AP NGR 410 745) on boundary between Great and Little Stanney, may be the same site. Mentioned 1279 in the Coucher Book of Whalley Abbey (2). Norris states there is some evidence for the watercourse surviving in the 1960s (3).
