Full Description

<1> Liverpool University Field Archaeology Unit, 1991, Proposed Carden hall Golf Course - Draft Archaeological Impact Assessment, Site 22 (Client Report). SCH5395.

Small circular mound, c.9m in diameter with 2 small patches of rock exposed. Considered to be a possible Bronze Age round barrow. However, a trench 3m x 1m was excavated by David Higgins in 1991, to establish whether the mound was a barrow or natural. Mound consisted of 20-30cm of stoney soil overlying natural bedrock. There was no buried soil horizon and the only finds were brick, slate and coke indicating post medieval disturbance. The natural rock outcrops at a much higher level than the surrounding ground. Higgins concluded that the mound is natural and not a barrow.
