Summary

A pair of possible curvilinear enclosures are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. In earlier photographs the eastern enclosure appears similar to the possible neolithic mortuary enclosure to the south. Later photographs suggest an Iron Age or Romano-British settlement enclosure.

<1> Cheshire Historic Environment Record, 1990-2001, Jill Collens and Rob Philpott's Aerial Photographs, 3/911-916, 1032 (Aerial Photograph). SCH5403.

An oblong enclosure discovered by aerial reconnaissance in 1993. Appears similar to the possible neolithic mortuary enclosure to the south (CHER 1807/1/1).

<2> Historic England & Archaeological Research Services, 2017, Cheshire National Mapping Programme and Lidar Mapping Project: Sampling the Peak Fringe, Cheshire Plain and Mersey Valley, 1606889 (Digital Archive). SCH8172.

A pair of possible later prehistoric / Roman curvilinear enclosures are visible as cropmark ditches centred at approximately SJ 4107 5600 on aerial photography (see 3). The less fragmented cropmark enclosure, to the east, has internal dimensions of at least 35.5 x 31.6m, with small gaps in the cropmark ditch on the northern and eastern sides and a longer boundary extending to the south, along with much of the southern perimeter of the enclosure not being visible. Only a small fragment of the potential second enclosure survives to the west of the first.

Another potential interpretation for the cropmarks is as medieval / post medieval enclosures or a later ditch surrounding a tree ring or small copse.

<3> Liverpool Museum, 1986-2002, Liverpool Museum Aerial Photography Collection, LMU 19842/2 06/06/2001 (Aerial Photograph). SCH8956.

<4> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 10/12/2020 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Morphology, as recorded by (2), is consistent with a late prehistoric - Romano-British settlement enclosure.
