Full Description

At Mickle Trafford the shed existed as early as 1872.(1) As the Chester-Warrington and Mickle Trafford - Northwich lines did not initially juncture, the shed and corresponding yard may have originally acted as an engine shed. Situated at the end of the Mickle Trafford - Northwich stretch of railway, the shed may have been utilized for small running repairs, coaling or watering, or for overnight activity. With the uniting of the 2 railway lines (along with the Mickle Trafford - Hawarden Bridge line completed in 1874) the use of the shed in this capacity would have become obsolete. By 1910 (2) the building is labeled as a goods shed. At many stations there was a siding into which goods trains could be run to enable a passenger train to pass, and if the volume of business warranted it, a goods shed may have existed. By 1982 the shed still survives; (3) and has been joined by a larger depot just off Station Lane - although it is unclear whether this possesses any connection with the railway.
