Summary
Test trench revealed small stones hammered into yellow/orange clay and a `V' ditch-150cm wide and deep. On the shoulder of the agger fist sized stones have been hammered into the clay forming a kerb. A section through the agger revealed that the clay was spread on a layer of stones 50- 75mm thick and these overlay a thin layer of blue/gray pea gravels. The width of the road was indeterminate.
Agger - The Roman name for embankment built to allow drainage of the road surface. Could be simple earth structures or be many different layers of stone. Material for the agger was usually dug for a ditch on either side of the road.

Full Description
Test trench revealed small stones hammered into yellow/orange clay. Also present `V' ditch-150cm wide and deep. On the shoulder of the agger fist sized stones have been hammered into the clay forming a kerb. A section through the agger revealed that the clay was spread on a layer of stones 50- 75mm thick and these overlay a thin layer of blue/gray pea gravels. the natural being hard red clay. The width of the road was indeterminate (1).
