Monument record 1811 - Old Beachin Farm

Please read our .

Summary

Moat at Old Beachin Farm. Only NW and NE arms remain, 10-12m wide and 0.9m deep. It is now dry. The NE arm is 65m long and is the best preserved one. The NW arm is 60m long but tapers towards SW end. It is now under pasture. Manor held by the Earl of Chester at Domesday passing through various owners and from the Manor of Beachin into the Manor of Coddington in 1438. The manor house was after this date defunct and was probably used as a tenanted farm on the Coddington estate. Moated Sites are characterised by a waterlogged ditch that encloses a platform of land where buildings were built though they were also used for horticulture e.g. orchards. They were most popular in medieval times though not necessarily for the defensive advantages of being on an island as they were also seen as a sign of prestige. There are approximately 6000 across England with over 200 moated sites in Cheshire alone.
