Monument record 1966 - Moated Site at Mill Hill House Farm

Please read our .

Summary

A square moat, c.80m across. Moat averages 10m wide x 1m deep. Slight trace of causeway in middle of north side with slight hollow in interior opposite. Slopes slightly mutilated by plough, particularly on south side. Moat is grass covered and is normally dry. No trace of building foundations in interior. Moated Sites are characterised by a waterlogged ditch that encloses a platform of land where buildings were built though they were also used for horticulture e.g. orchards. They were most popular in medieval times though not necessarily for the defensive advantages of being on an island as they were also seen as a sign of prestige. There are approximately 6000 across England with over 200 moated sites in Cheshire alone.

Moat is grass covered and is normally dry. No trace of building foundations in interior. At north-west corner of internal platform a disturbed area may represent archaeological investigation. Disturbance to site has been caused by the insertion of surface land drains. Ridge and furrow around moat, north side of ditch truncated by north-south aligned ridges. A channel runs from south-west corner of moat to a now dry pond 50m to south. Possibly an overflow drain for the moat and later than the moat itself.
