Full Description
Neolithic flint axehead which has been ground to a smooth surface all over. The axehead is of the Seamer type , which is described as 'having a well rounded cutting edge, slightly concave sides and a broad butt. It can be further characterized by the quality of the grinding and the use of colourful raw materials' (Clough and Cummins; 1979; 67-69). This axe has been made from an orangey-brown (almost toffee) flint which has been polished all over to give it the smooth surface. There are some white inclusion in the flint, perhaps fossils or minerals. Both ends of the axe have been made into a blade edge. This type of axe was in use throughout the Neolithic period so cannot be dated more closely than 3500 BC- 2100BC.
