Full Description
Fragment of a blade of a Bronze Age flat axe found with a metal detector in March 1993, at a depth of 12 inches in a pasture field sloping towards a brook. Field has been ploughed in the past, but retains slight traces of ridge and furrow. Pieces of bronze dross reported to be scattered over a wide area (1). Fragment is heavily corroded and measures 35mm across the cutting edge, with a 30mm length of blade surviving. Score marks at the point of fracture suggest the axe had been deliberately broken in antiquity, perhaps for scrap (2).
