Summary

A 17th century boat on the bottom of the River Dee, south of Farndon. Carvel construction, not clinker. Carvel construction is a method of constructing wooden boats and tall ships by fixing planks to a frame so that the planks butt up against each other, edge to edge, gaining support from the frame and forming a smooth hull. The boat is c.60ft long x c.7ft wide and double pointed. The ribs are 2ins wide x 4ins deep x 10ins apart. Boards are 9ins deep x 2ins thick. The planking is 10ins deep. The pieces are fitted by handmade iron nails, c.4ins long with off round heads. The wood appears to be pine and rather crudely dressed. A rib, piece of boarding and other pieces from the boat. are in private possession. The timbers are burnt inside.
