Summary

Moat, site of original Shotwick Hall. Not a stone remains of this hall, but its site is marked by a coppice known as the Moat Plantation. This coppice is c.50 paces square and the moat surrounding it is plainly visible. Site comprises an island & moat formerly the site of Shotwick Hall & now occupied by Moat Plantation. Island is c25m x 32m and c0.5m above surface fields. Moat c10m x 1.5m deep is largely silted up. Narrow channel at western corner links moat to present field drains. Larger waterlogged/silted channel enters northeast arm of moat close to north corner. Outer banks c6m wide exist along northeast & southeast arms. Original Hall was burned down c 1620 and a new hall constructed 150m to the east. Moated Sites are characterised by a waterlogged ditch that encloses a platform of land where buildings were built though they were also used for horticulture e.g. orchards. They were most popular in medieval times though not necessarily for the defensive advantages of being on an island as they were also seen as a sign of prestige. There are approximately 6000 across England with over 200 moated sites in Cheshire alone.
