Summary

Schedule medieval moated site at Hatton hall. Is square in plan and the Island measures c60m x 55m and stands c 0.5m above surrface land. Hall with drive & outbuildings occupy most of N half of island, rest is garden & lawn. The moated site dates to c.1200 when Hatton was granted to the Hattons of Hatton, near Daresbury, who established a branch of the family there in the early-mid 13th century. The hall was a quadrangular structure of timber with access via a drawbridge. The hall was replaced by the present house c.1830

Moat is up to 1.7m deep

The moated site dates to c.1200 when Hatton was granted to the Hattons of Hatton, near Daresbury, who established a branch of the family there in the early-mid 13th century. The hall was a quadrangular structure of timber with access via a drawbridge. The hall was replaced by the present house c.1830

Island measures c60m x 55m and stands c 0.5m above surface land. Hall with drive & outbuildings occupy most of N half of island, rest is garden & lawn. Some scarps run N-S and E-W and may reflect layout predating present hall. Moat 18-20m in width, largely waterlogged, widens at NE corner. Inlet/outlet channel at SW. Sandstone revetted causeway across N arm of moat. E of causeway is terraced ornamental flowerbeds. Outer banks flank S & E arms, up to 0.5m high
