Summary

Early Bronze Age flat axe, 92mm long and 9mm thick. The blade is 36mm wide. It dates to around 2000BC. Flat Axes are the earliest forms of metal axes found in this country. They were cast in an open mould and have no flanges or loops for fixing to handles like later metal axe heads.

Full Description

Early Bronze Age flat axe, 92mm long and 9mm thick. Blade is 36mm wide. Weight 103.4 grams. Outer surface corroded. Found with a metal detector on the surface of a harrowed field at Bickley in May 1991 (1). Similar examples include Newbold Astbury (CSMR 1157/0/1), Mottram St Andrew (CSMR 1417), Tattenhall (CSMR 1820/0/6) and Kinderton (CSMR 2059). Fragmentary example from Malpas (CSMR 2044) and larger one from Grappenhall (CSMR 495). Early Bronze Age c.2000 b.c.
