Full Description

<1> Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME), 1986, Peel Hall (Report). SCH2626.

Possible series of ponds in garden at Peel Hall. Partly filled-in remains of ponds or quarries up to 0.9m deep and 110m long east-west. Smoothed by modern cultivation. A long, straight broad ramped access is provided from its south-west corner. A low bank running from the ditched mound down the north edge of the ramp was shown as a field boundary in OS mapping of 1897. At the same date the east end only of the feature is shown as partly water-filled. Two hollows of similar size opening off its east end may also have been ponds. They may have originated as marl-pits, but the size of the west end and its ramp might favour an interpretation as a clay pit for brick-making
