Summary

Bronze Age flat axe found near the Sandstone Trail, in fallen soil from a hedge bank. It is broken at cutting edge and butt. Flat Axes are the earliest forms of metal axes found in this country. They were cast in an open mould and have no flanges or loops for fixing to handles like later metal axe heads.

Full Description

Bronze Age flat axe found 4 July 1991 by , 3-4m from the Sandstone Trail, in fallen soil from a hedge bank. Axe is c.96mms long and c.67mms wide across flared blade. It is broken at the cutting edge and butt. Drawing. Axe taken to Grosvenor Museum for identification (1).
