Full Description
The crash site of a British Supermarine Spitfire Mark V fighter (No. W3569) belonging to 316 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, which crashed on the Cloud on the 21st of March 1944. The pilot, Sgt Zygmunt Kowalski, was on a training flight from RAF Woodvale near Southport when he suffered an engine fire. The pilot attempted a forced landing but the aircraft crashed during the attempt and the pilot was killed (1). W3569 was a Mark V Supermarine Spitfire (possibly a Vb); it was one of a batch of 450 such aircraft delivered between March and October 1941, by Vickers-Supermarine, to contract number B.17913/39. It was assigned to 603, 611, 416, 602, 164, 341, 340 and finally 316 Squadron of the Royal Air Force (2).
