Summary

Single sandstone pillar in three parts which is the only surviving element of the former village stocks. A notice board on the south side of the Smithy records the fact that Eaton's stocks were removed to Eaton Cottage by the tenant John Gould. The only surviving post has subsequently been recovered and resisted in the original position. Stocks were used as a form of punishment in towns and villages from medieval times to the 19th century. A person would be placed in the stocks and fastened by their ankles and subject to public humiliation.

Full Description

Single sandstone pillar in three parts which is the only surviving element of the former village stocks. The pillar measures 1.42m high by 0.37 wide by 19cm thick and has been reset in concrete on the triangular green west of the Smithy. The pillar includes a slot 0.27m long by 0.13m wide. A notice board on the south side of the Smithy records the fact that Eaton stocks were removed to Eaton Cottage by the tenant John Gould. The only surviving post had subsequently been recovered and resisted in the original position. The remains of the stocks are Listed along with Eaton Smithy, which is a private dwelling (1 & 2). The stocks are not curtilage listed as part of the Smithy (3).
