Monument record 1945/1/2 - Moat North of Huntingdon Hall Moated Site

Please read our .

Summary

Small square moat situated 50m north of larger moated site (RN:1945/ 0/1). Small moat is c.40m externally, overgrown with trees does not appear to be a marl pit, like several surrounding pits, and may have been a moated orchard. It is not scheduled with the larger moat (RN:1945/0/1). Moated Sites are characterised by a waterlogged ditch that encloses a platform of land where buildings were built though they were also used for horticulture e.g. orchards. They were most popular in medieval times though not necessarily for the defensive advantages of being on an island as they were also seen as a sign of prestige. There are approximately 6000 across England with over 200 moated sites in Cheshire alone.
