Monument record 844/1/14 - Roman Road - Hollands Lane (Chester - Manchester Route 7a)

Please read our .

Summary

Roman road - Chester to Manchester. Hollands Lane runs N/S at the foot of a steep scarp which the Roman road had to surmount. A deep cutting now partially filled shows how an acceptable gradient was achieved and a terrace obliquely rising across the lower, less steep slope, linked the road below with the foot of the cutting. Both constructions are still clearly discernible in the garden at the rear of 'High Knowle', the cut through the crest showing as a wide V with the progress of its filling being marked by a series of successively buried hedgerows. Agger - The roman name for embankment built to allow drainage of the road surface. Could be simple earth structures or be many different layers of stone. Material for the agger was usually dug for a ditch on either side of the road.
