Full Description

The dam and pond were converted for use as a water supply for the estate by Lord Egerton c.1880. The present pump-house is a purpose-built red brick building with slate roofs, timber door and shutters built up against the brick dam wall. Within the pump house, a late 19th century iron overshot wheel fed via a sluiced channel direct from the old mill pool. A second water supply arrives via a series of settling tanks to a pump. The present pump is of centrifugal type installed about 1980 with a gearbox reducing the 4.5rpm of the water wheel to 3000rpm of the pump. The pump is a replacement for a piston type ram c.1920, whose sleeves and rings wore badly due to sand suspended within the water. The whole assembly supplied the water needs of the mansion, its gardens, farms and parts of Rostherne village. It continues to be used today.

This brick building adjoins the brick face of the mill dam and houses the pump for the water supply to the pleasure grounds and may date to the mid nineteenth century when the corn mill ceased and the water was used for the pleasure grounds instead. (2)
