Full Description

Village lock up, opposite the Royal Oak Hotel, Kelsall. Marked on Parish Map as being situated near a pinfold, now gone (see 3). [MH Ridgeway FI]

Lock-up: probably early-mid nineteenth century. Rock-faced buff sandstone, massive slabs forming flat roof. Stands c.1.6m in height and is semi-circular in plan. Flat side against the road has low entrance with sheet iron door.

The lock up and pinfold referred to in (1) were located c.10 metres to the west (see 1864/0/2). This building is not located on the 1838 tithe map (see 5).
