Full Description
A grant in the early 13th century referred to a vetus fossatum - an old coal pit - near Hazelhurst. The geology is such that a coal mine is unlikely to have been successful, then or later. (1)
A 'Gig Hole Field' in Norshaw may imply an attempt to locate and mine coal in Tatton; if so it was presumably a failure. (2)
