Full Description
{1} Land came into Sir Richard's hands in 1286, in which was included a large block in the south-eastern quarter of Tatton, on both sides of the then Portstrete. It was this land, south and east of Tatton Brook and the village, which Sir Richard converted to a park. In 1288 Sir Richard was granted royal permission to enclose Portstrete where it ran through his new park towards Knutsford, re-routing it nearer the edge of the mere. In 1294 he also obtained a royal grant of free warren on all his demense lands. Parks were probably rare in the county at this date, only six are recorded before 1300. Unfortunately the likely site of this park is an area where sub-soiling has recently occurred, negating archaeological survival.
