Monument record 4611 - Milestone at the Corner of Narrow Lane

Milestone, circa 1897, cast iron, painted black and white. Triangular on plan with top sloping forward towards front point of triangle. White painted with black plinth and picked out letters and numerals. Marked Cheshire County Council on the top sloping face with Nantwich 5 and Whitchurch 16 on the east cheek and Haslington 1, Wheelock 3½, Sandbach 5 and Congleton 12 on the west cheek. The back is hollow with two horizontal braces to the side cheeks. Listed for group value only (1).

Cast iron milestone painted white and site on the broad grass verge 2.3m from the roadside. The sturdy structure is firmly set into the well-kept grass verge. The triangular-shaped milestone stands 0.91m high by 0.48m wide by 0.25m deep. The structure of c.1897 date is painted white with black numerals and lettering. The paintwork has nearly all worn off. The raised letters record Crewe 1, Nantwich 5 and Whitchurch 16 on the east face; Haslington 1, Wheelock 3.5, Sandbach 5 and Congleton 12 on the west face. The triangular top records 'Cheshire County Council'. The back of the structure is hollow with two triangular plates to the side pieces. The milestone is structurally sound but rusting and in need of some protective paint (2 & 3).
