Summary

Sandstone milestone on on the Stockport to Macclesfield turnpike. Dating from c.1820 it has been resited on broad grass verge well set-back from the A523. The stone stands 0.8m high by 0.48m wide by 0.1m deep at the base. A cast iron plate bolted to the stone is inscribed in raised capitals 'From London 173 Miles From Macclesfield 6 Miles To Stockport 6 Miles. The plate is painted white with black lettering.

Full Description

Milestone: c1820. Buff sandstone slab with a shaped top has a cast-iron plate reading "FROM LONDON 173 MILES FROM MACCLESFIELD 6 MILES TO STOCKPORT 6 MILES". Erected on refurbished Stockport-Macclesfield turnpike. Similar examples in Prestbury (q.v.) and Poynton (1).

Sandstone milestone with shaped head resited on broad grass verge well set-back from the A523. The stone stands 0.8m high by 0.48m wide by 0.1m deep at the base. A cast iron plate bolted to the stone is inscribed in raised capitals 'From London 173 Miles From Macclesfield 6 Miles To Stockport 6 Miles. The plate is painted white with black lettering. The cast plate measures 0.46m wide by 0.61m wide by 2.5cm (1") thick. The monument has been refurbished and is in excellent condition. The inscription indicates its former usage as a c.1820s milestone on the Stockport to Macclesfield turnpike (2 & 3).
