Summary

Boundary stone of early 19th century date almost hidden by a hawthorn hedge adjacent to the north side of Whitley Brook bridge on the east side of the A49 trunk road. The sandstone block measures 0.76m high by 0.58m wide by 0.25m deep. The west face is inscribed 'Lower Whitley' in capitals but the remaining text is no longer decipherable, but once read 'Boundary the North of this Bridge'. It is a grade II Listed Building.

Full Description

A grade II Liisted boundary stone dating from the early nineteenth century. It is a rectangular block of pink sandstone worn and partly damaged. The west face reads: LOWER WHITLEY Boundary THE NORTH OF THIS BRIDGE (1).

Boundary stone of early 19th century date almost hidden by a hawthorn hedge adjacent to the north side of Whitley Brook bridge on the east side of the A49 trunk road. The sandstone block measures 0.76m high by 0.58m wide by 0.25m deep. The west face is inscribed 'Lower Whitley' in capitals but the remaining text is no longer decipherable. The stone is set back 2.6m from the footpath and 5.5m from the roadside. Its function is only interpreted by the inscription and its location. The monument is well-hidden and may be at risk to hedge cutting particularly if its whereabouts are unknown to the operative (2).
