Summary

In the Domesday book, Claverton is recorded as an independent vill that was part of the possessions of Hugh Fitz Osberne, predecessor of the Pulfords. It had land for 2 ploughs. It was a rich manor in 1086, valued at 12 pence a year, with a salt-wich in Northwich and 8 houses in the city of Chester in Duke Street. It has been suggested as a deserted medieval village, but is more likely a deserted manor.

Full Description

At Domesday, Claverton formed an independent vill and was part of the possessions of Hugh Fitz Osberne, predecessor of the Pulfords. It had land for 2 ploughs (1). Claverton was a rich manor in 1086, valued at 12 pence a year, with a salt-wich in Northwich and 8 houses in the city of Chester in Duke Street. Almost depopulated by 1957 (2). Suggested as a deserted medieval village, but more likely deserted manor (3).
